The Thunder Returns
by Mike Bozich
The most exciting two minutes in sports makes its return to Hazel Park Harness Raceway on Friday, April 14 as we kick off the highly anticipated 2006 live racing season with first post scheduled for 7:45. Live racing returns with Fan Appreciation Weekend, which features $1 hot dogs, popcorn, and soft drinks and 16 oz. draft beers for just $2.00!

“I always mark opening day on my calendar,” says racing fan Mark Heiden. “The excitement of live harness racing cannot be topped by any sport.” Madison Heights native Tom Williams agrees. “When the horses explode down the stretch and the crowd is roaring, it makes for a great time.”

The state's top drivers, trainers, and horses will return to do battle at America’s pioneer 5/8th’s mile racetrack in 2006. Driver Eric Goodell will be looking to add another Hazel Park driving title to his impressive resume. The five time Hazel Park title earner will have plenty of competition, as veteran drivers Brad Kramer, Vince Copeland, Mark Webster, and John Moody look to end Goodell’s powerful reign. Also talented youngsters Billy Dobson, Tyler Buter, and Jason Merriman look to make their presence felt as well.

Superstar trainer Rob Harmon will return his powerful stable to the battlegrounds in 2006. Harmon won over 50 races in 2005 and accumulated purses better then $200,000 in a remarkable campaign. A repeat will be difficult however with 2006 Northville Downs leading trainer by wins Rebekah Swinko on the scene. Other top trainers that are sure to make waves in 2006 are Mike Watson, Gerald Malady, and Eric Beach.

Keep it locked on www.hazelparkraceway.com for continuous updates and special features throughout the year. Hazel Park races Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday with a first post of 7:45.
