HORSE RACING IS FUN Part 1 (by Mike Bozich)
I was enjoying a cool refreshing ale after the races at a local establishment Tuesday Night, and I was approached by a loyal customer who isn't afraid to speak his mind. We'll call him Patron X...and he had a story for me that opened my eyes to a few things about this business. This is the story he told, exact words. Patron X: "A few years ago, I came to Hazel Park with $20 in my pocket, $20 (BLEEP) dollars. I loved this horse in the first race and he was 45-1. My friend asked me who I liked and I told him the 3 horse. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA this (BLEEP) horse doesn't have a (BLEEP) chance. Well if you don't (BLEEP) like him then who do you (BLEEP) like? The 4 can't lose says my friend. I say's let me tell you something about the (BLEEP) 4....(BLEEP BLEEP BLEEP), and that's what I think about the 4..." Mike B: "Well, who did you bet? " Patron X: "The (BLEEP) 4 of course..." Mike B: "...and who won the race?" (Like I didn't know the answer to this question) Patron X: The (BLEEP) 3 horse paid $127 to win... As the story goes, Patron X went on to great things that night..he bet a 14-1 to show and he won. He had an 11-1 horse that won but was taken down due to interference at the 1/4, and his car wouldn't start in the parking lot when he went home. But there is justice in this world. The next day, Patron X came to the track and hit a trifecta that paid $3,200...and he had the perfecta in that race for $575. All was forgotten. The roller coaster ride was complete. As Patron X strolled away from my table, and as last call was being announced, I had a revelation. Can Patron X be the missing secret ingredient of Harness Racing's Revival? What I witnessed in Patron X's tale of Rag's to Riches was reality TV at it's very best. I mean c'mon, does it get any more dramatic then what just happened to our buddy X? Every racing fan, young and old, whether casual or hardcore, has a story about the racetrack. Maybe these are the stories that need to be told. Maybe these are the tales of adventure that people can relate to. So I ask you this question. Can Harness Racing best be marketed through it's current fan base? Send your answer to hazelparkharness@yahoo.com, and as long as there isn't to many (BLEEPS), I won't mind posting it. |
